Among these, Miyawaki plantations have emerged as a high-impact intervention, enabling rapid creation of dense, native mini-forests in limited spaces while enhancing local biodiversity and ecosystem resilience. By prioritising indigenous species, close planting densities, and accelerated soil preparation, these plantations help enhance local biodiversity as well as improve carbon sequestration. Recognising these benefits, UltraTech has progressively integrated Miyawaki plantations alongside its conventional greenbelt programmes, planting over 4.66 lakh saplings company-wide in FY25 as part of its broader ecological stewardship efforts.
Building on this company-wide approach, UltraTech’s integrated manufacturing unit Dalla Cement Works located in Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh represents the Company’s most recent large-scale deployment of Miyawaki plantations. Since FY24, Dalla Cement Works has implemented Miyawaki plantations across two hectares of its Julgul and Bhalua limestone mining areas, planting over 63,000 saplings.
Local species such as Neem, Peepal, Banyan and Amla were planted in high density to promote natural competition and faster growth. This initiative is distinct from the unit’s conventional greenbelt development, where an additional 12,000 saplings of local species were planted using traditional spacing and landscaping practices. The plantations were executed in planned phases, supported by drip irrigation, rainwater harvesting ponds, and the active engagement of local villagers and self-help groups to ensure long-term upkeep. A sapling survival rate of over 90% was achieved for both the plantation areas in the unit.
Complementing these efforts, integrated cement manufacturing units Awarpur Cement Works, located in Chandrapur, Maharashtra, and Maihar Cement Works, located in Satna, Madhya Pradesh, also initiated pilot Miyawaki plantations on a trial basis in FY26. Basis the success of the pilots, the units will scale up the plantations similar to the work done by Dalla Cement Works unit.
These initiatives build on UltraTech’s earlier Miyawaki plantation efforts undertaken across multiple manufacturing locations since 2022. Miyawaki plantations have been implemented across several units, including integrated cement manufacturing units such as Gujarat Cement Works in Amreli (Gujarat), Vikram Cement Works in Neemuch and Bela Cement Works in Rewa (Madhya Pradesh), and the Bara Cement Works grinding unit near Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh), creating compact, self-sustaining green spaces within operational areas. Along with these, the Birla White (UltraTech’s White Cement Business Division) integrated manufacturing unit in Kharia Khangar, Rajasthan, also initiated its own Miyawaki plantation beginning in 2022, and planted around 5,000 saplings in an area of over 3,600 square metres over two phases in 2022 and 2023.
These projects demonstrate the adaptability of the Miyawaki method across diverse climatic and geographical contexts, while also reflecting UltraTech’s systematic integration of Miyawaki plantations into its broader biodiversity management framework.
By combining large-scale plantation programmes, conventional greenbelts and targeted Miyawaki interventions, the Company continues to integrate nature-positive solutions into its operations, reinforcing its long-term commitment to ecological conservation and responsible growth.
