Uses of Plywood
How Is Plywood Made?
Plywood is made by gluing together thin layers of wood, called veneers, with their grains placed at right angles for added strength. Here's how it's done:
1. Log Selection: Timber logs are selected based on strength and quality requirements.
2. Peeling: The logs are rotated against a blade to peel them into thin sheets (veneers).
3. Drying: The veneers are dried to remove excess moisture and prevent warping.
4. Gluing: Each sheet is coated with adhesive, often a waterproof resin, for bonding.
5. Layering & Pressing: Veneers are stacked in alternating grain patterns and pressed under heat and pressure.
6. Trimming & Finishing: The final board is trimmed to size and may be sanded or treated for added durability.
Tips for Choosing the Right Plywood for Homebuilding
Selecting the right plywood can make a significant difference in the quality and longevity of your construction:
1. Consider the environment
Use marine plywood for areas exposed to moisture (like bathrooms and kitchens) to ensure durability.
2. Check the quality of adhesive
Higher-quality adhesives will prevent plywood from delaminating or breaking down over time.
3. Match the right type for the job
Laminated plywood offers a polished finish for furniture or decorative elements, while commercial plywood is ideal for basic structural uses.
