30th January, 2026: UltraTech Cement Limited, India’s largest cement and ready-mix concrete company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), one of India’s largest integrated energy companies, at India Energy Week 2026, to jointly explore and pilot a first‑of‑its‑kind circularity initiative for used lubricating oils in the Indian cement industry.
Mr. K C Jhanwar, Managing Director, UltraTech Cement Limited, said, “At UltraTech, we make recycling and reuse a core part of how we work. Our partnership with HPCL is a major step toward creating a sustainable system for lubricating oils in India. Together, we are using innovation and collective action to build a greener future”.
Ch Srinivas, Executive Director – Lubes, HPCL, said, “Achieving true circularity in used oil begins when re-refined base oil is reintegrated into finished lubricants. Our collaboration with UltraTech marks an important step toward building a scalable model for used oil circularity and significantly reducing carbon footprint across operations in collaboration with Industrial Corporates in India.”
Under the MoU, UltraTech and HPCL will collaborate to reprocess used lubricating oils generated from UltraTech’s manufacturing units into high‑quality re‑refined base oil at HPCL’s Green R&D Centre in Bengaluru. As a part of the pilot, HPCL will explore development of finished lubricants using re-refined base oil to meet UltraTech’s performance specifications.
Aligned with the Central Pollution Control Board’s (CPCB) Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) guidelines for used oil, the MoU creates a mechanism for the responsible collection, handling, recycling and reuse of used oil.
UltraTech’s approach to circularity is based on tackling the environmental challenges of overutilisation of resources and depletion of natural raw material and disposal of waste generated from it. The Company achieved a 5.7% thermal substitution rate in FY25, utilising over 2.1 million tonnes of alternative fuels in its kilns, helping reduce use of fossil fuels in its operations. In FY25, UltraTech also utilised over 44 million tonnes of recycled and alternative raw materials in cement production, helping divert waste from being irresponsibly discarded, and buried in landfills.
