December 14th, 2023 : On National Energy Conservation Day, celebrated on December 14th, UltraTech Cement reaffirms its commitment towards energy conservation across the value chain of its operations as well as focusing on energy efficiency improvement and enhancing the use of green energy in its operations.

Started in 1991, the day is observed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) which is under the Ministry of Power, to promote cost-efficient energy production and resource conservation.

This year, UltraTech, achieved the top position in sustainability within the Infrastructure and Engineering sector. This recognition was conferred by SustainLabs Paris and BW Businessworld in India's Most Sustainable Companies list for 2022-2023.

This recognition not only acknowledges UltraTech’s commitment but also amplifies its pledge to practical and actionable measures for energy efficiency and conservation. It echoes the Company’s key goal to champion reducing its carbon footprint through energy efficiency and pave the way for greener usage in the future.

UltraTech’s commitment to global initiatives like EP100 and RE100 unites it with other businesses dedicated to efficient energy use and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By 2050, the Company aims to fulfill 100% of its electricity needs from renewable and green sources.

For example, Reddipalayam Cement Works, an integrated cement manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadu, operates a wind farm in the high-capacity wind power zone at Tirunelveli, for transitioning to renewable energy. The wind farm is part of several initiatives the Company has taken up to move towards its ambition to increase the share of its green energy to 85% of its total power requirements by FY30. UltraTech is committed to meeting 100 percent of its electricity requirements through green energy sources by 2050.

Moreover, the Company believes in forging transformative partnerships towards contributing to a sustainable future. Collaborating with the World Economic Forum's Moving India initiative, the Company joined forces with India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and NITI Aayog’s e-FAST India program. This collaboration aims to establish India’s inaugural zero-emissions road freight cluster along the west coast, deploying over 550 zero-emission trucks in select road corridors in Gujarat and Maharashtra. This step is pivotal in sculpting a sustainable transport ecosystem, harmonising environmental consciousness with logistical efficiency. Additionally, Awarpur Cement Works in Maharashtra is UltraTech’s first unit to induct LNG trucks into its fleet of bulkers supporting fly ash transport. Each LNG truck helps reduce up to 36 tonnes of carbon emissions annually, helping the Company reduce its Scope 3 emissions to ensure a cleaner and greener supply chain.

Adding another milestone in its sustainability journey, UltraTech has partnered with Coolbrook, a Finland-based technology and engineering company. This collaboration introduces Coolbrook's groundbreaking RotoDynamic HeaterTM technology in cement manufacturing. By utilising electrification from renewable sources, this technology aims to reduce the need for fossil-fuel-based thermal energy in cement manufacturing.

UltraTech has adopted a holistic approach to sustainability encapsulating energy management, pioneering collaborations, and innovative technologies. As the world celebrates improvements in energy conservation, UltraTech continues its energy transition journey to build a sustainable future.
