Building Resilient Ecosystems: UltraTech's Commitment to Nature Conservation

As ecosystems across the world face increasing pressure from climate change, habitat loss and resource depletion, responsible conservation has become more important than ever. On World Nature Conservation Day, UltraTech reaffirms its commitment to protecting and restoring natural ecosystems through science-based biodiversity management, water stewardship and responsible resource use. UltraTech recognises the interdependence of natural ecosystems and industrial operations and has adopted a science-based approach to assess and mitigate biodiversity risks across its operations. The Company aims to preserve critical natural capital while enabling long-term resource security, through responsible water management and mining, and biodiversity-focused policies.

 

UltraTech's biodiversity strategy integrates biodiversity protection into its operational planning, as guided by its ‘No Net Loss’ commitment. The Company aims to minimise ecological impact and ensure its land use practices support long-term environmental resilience, through habitat conservation efforts, scientific assessments and land restoration practices.

 

In FY19, UltraTech committed to biodiversity risk and impact assessments across all its integrated units, reinforcing its commitment to responsible business practices. By FY25, UltraTech had completed biodiversity assessments across all 24 of its operational integrated units, each conducted within a 10 km radius of the site. Having met this target, UltraTech has since expanded its focus to include recent mergers, acquisitions and greenfield and brownfield projects. With this, as of FY26, 68% of UltraTech’s integrated units have Biodiversity Management Plans (BMPs) that align with its commitment to achieving ‘No Net Loss’.

 

In addition, 100% of the quarries at UltraTech’s integrated units have well-developed rehabilitation plans. Following completion of mining activities in a quarry, the Company rehabilitates mined-out areas by backfilling pits where feasible or converting them into water reservoirs. The Company also plants green belt around its mining areas, ensuring responsible site operations and the availability of stable land for future generations. In FY26, thirteen of UltraTech’s Limestone Mines were recognised for excellence in sustainable mining by the Indian Bureau of Mines, Ministry of Mines. UltraTech also held the distinction for being accorded a 5-star rating for the highest number of mines across all categories of Minerals in 2025 for the second consecutive year.

 

UltraTech treats water security and biodiversity as connected outcomes. The Company has committed to responsible water use across its operations and communities and has instituted numerous initiatives and projects aimed at reducing, reusing, and recycling water. Through integrated watershed management projects, rainwater harvesting, desilting of ponds, and converting mine pits into reservoirs, UltraTech helps conserve and enhance water resources. UltraTech maintained a 5.8 times water positive status in FY26, with over 143 million cubic metres of water reused, recycled, harvested and recharged both within its plant premises and across surrounding communities.

 

UltraTech’s watershed development programme and water conservation efforts have also shown striking ecological improvements. For example, a biodiversity study was conducted in January 2025 in the Chitakheda region of Neemuch district to gauge the success of Vikram Cement Work’s watershed management project implemented in the area since 2010. The study found that due to increased water availability, vegetation and green cover in the region has flourished and over 20 species of birds, like Lapwings, and Kingfishers have been observed in the area after several years. The project was executed by UltraTech under a public-private partnership with the government of Madhya Pradesh under the ‘Government of India Watershed Management Scheme’. UltraTech served as both a knowledge partner and implementing partner besides bearing around 10% of the total project cost. The construction of the watershed structures commenced in 2012.

 

Along with these, Miyawaki plantations have also emerged as a high-impact intervention, enabling rapid creation of dense, native mini-forests in limited spaces while enhancing local biodiversity and ecosystem resilience. By prioritising indigenous species, close planting densities, and accelerated soil preparation, these plantations help enhance local biodiversity as well as improve carbon sequestration. Recognising these benefits, UltraTech has progressively integrated Miyawaki plantations alongside its conventional greenbelt programmes, planting over 6.57 lakh saplings company-wide in FY26 as part of its broader ecological stewardship efforts.

 

UltraTech also promotes circularity across its business operations to reduce pressure on natural resources. In FY26, UltraTech utilised 49.83 million tonnes of recycled and alternative raw materials in cement production, reducing dependence on virgin material extraction. The Company has increased its waste material usage by incorporating fly ash and red mud in clinker production. It also co-processes various types of waste, replacing traditional fuel and raw materials, thereby lessening its environmental impact and lowering its ecological footprint. The Company has also begun exploring circularity beyond its core process. In January 2026, UltraTech signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) to reprocess used lubricating oil from its manufacturing units into re-refined base oil.
