Baga Cement Works, an integrated cement of UltraTech Cement in Himachal Pradesh, was recently conferred with Golden Peacock Environment Management Award 2019 under the Cement Sector. The award recognizes the efforts of the unit in sustainable environment management in and around its vicinity.
Baga Cement Works uses alternative raw materials as substitutes to natural resources to ensure their conservation and increase the life of mines. Using pond ash and reducing the thermal and electrical energy consumption of the unit has resulted in reduction of its CO2 emissions. The unit also uses agro waste as alternative fuel to reduce the consumption of coal and CO2 emissions. It has also introduced controlled blasting technology and deployed Euro complied transportation vehicles at its mines.
Baga Cement Works has an inclusive environment aspect review system under ISO 14001. Within this system, the key factors are reviewed once in six months, and corresponding environment management programs are implemented and reviewed. The unit regularly carries out monitoring of ambient air quality, stack, noise, illumination, and waste water treatment inside and outside the unit, residential area and surrounding villages. The third party testing of all environment attributes is being done proactively from NABL accredited third party labs.
