Committed to Sustainability

1st March, 2013

Mr. O P Puranmalka

Committed to Sustainability

“Demonstrating its commitment to sustainability, UltraTech participated in the launch of the Low Carbon Technology Roadmap for the Cement Industry in India in New Delhi on February 25, 2013. The Indian industry’s average thermal consumption is about 725 kilocalories per kilogram of clinker as against the world average of 934 kCal / kg of clinker. For electrical energy, the consumption is 80 kWh / tonne of cement which is again lower than the world average of 107 kWh / tonne of cement. These numbers point to the fact that India has modern and technologically advanced processes. What is also important to note is that going forward, as the Indian industry puts up more plants to meet the country’s infrastructure needs, there is great opportunity for us to curtail our environmental footprint by reducing emissions, looking at increasing the use of additives like fly ash and making use of alternative fuels like municipal waste and industrial waste.

The new roadmap has been developed by CSI (Cement Sustainability Initiative of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development) and the IEA (International Energy Association) and outlines technologies, policy frameworks and investment plans that would reduce the direct CO2 emissions by 2050. The recommendations have a potential of saving at least 375 petajoules of energy by the said time. What is needed is decisive action by the government, the industry, financial institutions and other stakeholders.”
