Types of Flemish Bond
There are two main types of Flemish bond used in construction:
1. Single Flemish Bond
2. Double Flemish Bond
Uses of Flemish Bond
The uses of Flemish bond go beyond aesthetics. It’s popular in:
1. Heritage buildings and restoration work for an old-world look.
2. Exterior boundary walls that need both beauty and stability.
3. Decorative facades and front elevations in bungalows and villas.
4. Load-bearing walls, as the bond provides better strength than a simple stretcher bond.
What Homebuilders Should Keep in Mind
If you're planning to use a Flemish bond in your home project, here are a few things to remember for best results:
1. Hire skilled masons
Flemish bond is not a beginner-level brick pattern. Its alternating header-stretcher arrangement demands accuracy in alignment, spacing, and mortar application. Poor craftsmanship can ruin the strength and symmetry of the wall.
2. Choose uniform bricks
Slight size differences in bricks can throw off the entire pattern. Opt for high-quality, machine-made bricks that are uniform in size and shape.
3. Use proper mortar mix
Consistency in thickness prevents cracking and adds to the visual appeal. The mortar should not be too wet or dry and must be applied evenly to hold the pattern together.
4. Pick the right type
Consider where the wall will be placed. If only one side is visible, a Single Flemish bond is cost-effective. However, for exterior walls, fences, or boundary walls where both sides are exposed, go for a Double Flemish bond to maintain symmetry on both faces.
