Building your own home is a big responsibility. Many families wonder if the government can help when a house is still being built.
The good news is that there are government housing schemes that can make building or completing your home easier and cheaper.
You only build a house once. So, getting support the right way matters. Let’s see what help is available for homes under construction.
Government Support for Houses Under Construction
Most government housing schemes for home construction in India come through the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), which aims to provide Housing for All. The scheme supports both urban and rural families who do not already own a pucca house.
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0)
This scheme is meant for low- and middle-income families living in cities and towns.
Under PMAY-U 2.0:
Families from EWS, LIG, and MIG categories can get financial help to build, buy, or complete a house.
The government provides assistance of up to ₹2.5 lakh per family.
If you are building your own house, you can apply under Beneficiary-Led Construction (BLC).
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G)
PMAY-G is designed for rural families who do not have a permanent home.
Under PMAY-G:
Eligible families can receive ₹1.2 lakh to ₹1.3 lakh to build a pucca house.
Additional support may be available for toilet construction and basic amenities.
In some cases, payments for construction work are also supported through government employment schemes.
This means your government home loan scheme can be cheaper than a normal loan.
