The stages of a new home's construction.

October 27, 2020

Building a home of one’s own is one of the biggest decisions in life. Your home is your identity. Thus, it's essential to understand all the stages of home building, so that you can efficiently plan and track your new home's construction.

Why planning is important:

Planning helps you in deciding a suitable home plan, budget allocation, project timeline, thus ensuring the overall quality of your home. With proper planning, you don't just stay in control of your home building journey, you can also save up to 30% of your budget.

Here are the stages of home construction, to help you plan your home building journey:

1. Preparing the site and laying foundation

The first step to building your home is laying a strong and solid foundation. First, the site is cleared of rocks and debris. Before starting excavation, get the water testing done at site and ensure that the layout markings are as per the plan. Your construction team will level the site, and dig holes and trenches for laying the foundation.

Once the concrete is poured, it should be left to set and then thoroughly cured. After curing, it's best to do waterproofing and anti-termite treatment. UltraTech ILW+ is ideal for laying a damp proof course. Then, your team should backfill the area around the foundation walls with mud.

2. Framing

Once foundation is set, the next step is to make the structure of the home. This includes the installation of plinths, beams, columns, walls, roof slabs along with the frames for windows and doors. Rooms will be divided, showing you exactly how your newly constructed home will look. Make a note of beams and columns around the home, as they carry the load of the majority of the structure. This is the most important stage of construction as this decides the strength and structure of your home. Supervising is therefore crucial to your new home's construction.

3. Installation of doors and windows

Once the walls are plastered with a wall finish, windows and doors have to be installed. Windows and doors provide insulation and ventilation, so speak to your contractor about the right materials to be used.

4. Plumbing and Wiring

After the concrete structure of your home is ready, you can start installing the plumbing and electrical systems. Ensure you have unrestricted access to electrical boards and switches after moving in. The sewage pipes should always be below the drinking pipe to avoid contamination.

5. Finishing

Finally, your construction team will lay down the tiles, install electrical boards, cabinets, kitchen countertops etc. Consult with your family members about the finishing decor for your home.

Remember, supervision is key to ensuring every stage of home construction is under control. Ideally, you should visit the site every day to take stock of progress and inventory.
