Our integrated unit, Kotputli Cement Works (KCW) based in Jaipur, Rajasthan has halved the usage of water at its onsite thermal power plant (TPP). Rajasthan is the driest state in the country where water is scarce and with a prevailing high growth rate of population and industrial usage, the per capita water availability is going to further reduce to alarmingly low levels. Thus, conservation & sustainable usage of water is vital for the State.
Power requirement of KCW is met with the help of a 2X23 MW TPP based in the unit. This TPP is being operated in island mode, meaning thereby that the power plant operates in isolation from the national or local electricity distribution network. Boilers, turbines, water treatment plant, cooling tower and heat exchangers are the components in the power plants which require a lot of water for their operations.
Our team at KCW adopted several measures such as reduction of water utilization in wastewater and steam, recovery of steam, usage of blowdown water in the cooling tower, backwash water utilisation and reduction of unwanted water evaporation.
With these steps the water consumption in the Unit's TPP came down to 65,070 kilolitres during FY 17-18, i.e. more than half as compared to FY 14-15 levels. This commendable achievement by the KCW team reflects UltraTech's long-term commitment to adopting sustainable solutions and practices.
