In order to enhance commercial biodiversity and promote income generation among the locals, Jharsuguda Cement Works has initiated plantation of fruit bearing and medicinal species as a sustainable development activity. So far, the unit has planted mango, jackfruit, jamun, etc in the backyard gardens of seven villages, and 1,200 mango plants have been planted in the backyard country gardens and orchards.
To improve greenery in the nearby areas, the unit has also planted local species of about 500 plants in schools and colleges; and 1,700 inside the premises.
This year, Independence Day was celebrated with the theme - 'Save Our Green Planet'. After the flag hosting ceremony, the unit initiated the community-led plantation in Jamkani village. This village has been protecting its forest on its own. Now, JCW is also associated in the bio-diversity conservation process. The unit has planted trees, which will be taken care of by the forest protection committee of the village.
