Carbon emissions

We realise that cement is a carbon-intensive industry. That is why we have integrated low carbon strategy into our business roadmap to address SDG 13 (climate change goal) based on COP21 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Our strategy is governed by energy and carbon policy which is adopted by all our units. We have undertaken a voluntary strategy to reduce the impact of our operations on climate change. As a member of the international and national organizations like GCCA, FICCI, CII and CMA we are committed to publishing our emission data and set environmental performance targets. UltraTech has committed to Science Based Target and has aligned it business plans to requirements of Paris Agreement.

We have taken a voluntary target of reducing our carbon intensity by 25% by 2021 from 2005-06 levels. We contribute to the goal by integrating low carbon strategy and scaling up investments in the development of innovative products and services, improving energy efficiency, increasing the share of renewable energy, switching from fossil fuels to alternative materials.

Key Achievements

  • Adopted Internal Carbon Price (ICP) of USD 10
  • Ranked amongst global top 10 companies in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) in the Construction material category
  • Reduced CO2 intensity by about 19.14% compared to FY 2005-06
  • Our CO2 intensity has decreased to 613.76 from 632 kg/tonne of cementitious product.
  • Focused R&D efforts to diversify our portfolio by including products which have lower GHG impact.
  • Launched low carbon products such as Portland Pozzolona Cement (PPC) Super and Composite Cement which have a lower clinker factor compared to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC)
  • Increased the share of renewable energy with effective capacity of more than 99 MW renewable power source
  • Reduced lead distance for procurement of raw materials through local suppliers at various units
