The challenge for cement companies is to balance the growing demand for cement with its environmental implications by developing and championing sustainable solutions for the industry. In India, UltraTech Cement is a pioneer in incorporating environmental concerns into our decision making process.
As the largest cement producer in India, we continually strive to play a key role in finding effective and responsible ways to preserve the environment - a Cement Sustainability Initiative. We as a company are committed to improving our sustainable footprint in the identified areas of waste management, energy reduction, water conservation, biodiversity management, afforestation and emission reduction which are relevant to the cement industry.
As part of our commitment, we compile our carbon footprint across the business every year. Considering the growth in the cement business, we have identified safety as one area where major improvement is required. We have been engaged with DuPont for the last three years in improving our safety performance both in operating plants and projects. We are able to realize a visible change in our safety performance after this engagement.
UltraTech voluntarily joined the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI), a part of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development in 2006. Our association with CSI has helped us gain access to the best practices in the cement industry and benchmark our own sustainability practices with global players.
The Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) is a global effort by 24 major cement producers with operations in more than 100 countries who believe that there is a strong business case for the pursuit of sustainable development. Collectively, these companies account for around 30% of the world’s cement production and range in size from large multinationals to smaller local producers. To date, the CSI remains one of the largest global sustainability programs ever undertaken by a single industry sector.
