Birla White honours young talent
3 March 2006
Architectural monuments have always played a significant role in marking the progress of history. Take the examples of the Coliseum of Rome, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and our very own Taj Mahal.
In an endeavour to encourage young architects to push the boundaries of design and creativity, Birla White — a leader in the white cement industry — has been presenting a platform for the creative genius. Aimed at architectural colleges across the country, Birla White has pioneered a design contest in search for talent in design excellence. This year's Birla White Yuvaratna Awards called for design entries in two categories — Designer Flooring and GRC (Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete).
Instituted in 2004, Birla White Yuvaratna Awards is catalytic in providing an opportunity to aspiring and talented architects and designers to unleash their potential by designing outstanding designer floor designs and GRC patterns. The awards are the conduit for creating new trends and ushering in a new age with limitless options. Birla White received an overwhelming response this year. In all, there were 1054 entries from 34 colleges spread across nine states. Among the various path-breaking entries presented, an artist has worked out an entire concept for facilitating the movements of the visually impaired.
At the recently held Birla White Yuvaratna Awards function, Birla White felicitated 21 aspiring students from different states. The Chief Guest was Mrs. Rajashree Birla, Chairperson of the Aditya Birla Centre for Community Initiatives and Rural Development. Says Mrs. Birla, "The range of eclectic designs have been most impressive. It is a tribute to the innovative and creative spirit of the youngsters."
The panel of judges comprised of leading architects in the country — Mr. Sudhir Diwan, Mr. Ratan J Batliboi, Mr. Ravi Sarangan and Design Director of FCB ULKA, Mr. Ravindra Madkaikar.
A tribute to the budding architect
In the Designer Flooring category, there were two all-India level prizes and seven first and second prizes at the state level. In the GRC category, two all-India prizes and three zonal-level prizes were announced. Twenty-six consolation prizes were also announced. The winners received a trophy, certificate and cash reward. A certificate and token gift were also presented to all the participants.
This contest gave the architects of tomorrow an opportunity to come up with innovative ideas and creative designs using Birla While cement and GRC. Birla White is a medium for architects to translate their dreams to reality. The design possibilities with white cement and GRC are endless. Be it flooring or walls or landscaping, Birla White lends a touch of elegance and beauty to living spaces. Birla White has developed in-house, several designs and patterns using white cement and GRC.
The future is all about a competitive context that is different — a context that needs to be understood carefully before planning a foray that is complex. The Birla White Yuvaratna Awards are a befitting tribute to the budding artists who are eager to unleash their creative energy to create the impossible. All these with a heavy dose of imagination and a touch of fun leveraged by modern technology.
